3D printing is now helping us with music instruments, guns, camera lenses, shoes, dope iPhone cases, household items….and body organs. Wait what? Yes you heard it right! 3D printers have set a precedent, we didn’t think it could. The technology is all set to first, pave its way into the healthcare industry, and then, straight into human bodies. And not with some ordinary metal equipment production, but with the ability to print real working organs!
Now we all know human organs are more complex than even some of the most intricate things around. Nothing man-made can replace our natural system, which basically underpins our functioning. But, technology promises us greater things, in the most basic survival aid.
No one really printed fully functional, transplantable human organs, until now, when some Chinese scientists were able to successfully create what was unfathomable. They were successful in producing a living kidney from a 3D printer. Not just that human flesh; synthetic bones and even heart and thyroid glands are in the making.
This shows how far researchers have moved, beyond printing with plastics and metals— to now printing cells that form living human tissues- through bio printing. Being able to create kidneys would definitely help thousands of people who are impatiently waiting for their donors to give them a new lease of life.
Although the development is essential, these organs do not completely replicate to the natural ones. They can carry out the same functions but have no blood vessels or nerves, making their life restricted to four-six months.
Nonetheless, this will really be helpful for those who are surviving on dialysis or waiting list for organ transplants. As per the statistics, less than 20% of the patients in the waiting list get their organ transplant. The rest either die while waiting, or undergoing everyday agony.
But with the strength of technology making transplants happen, the ultimate goal is to create living organs that can stretch their viability for as much as 10 to 15 years.
