Let’s agree 2020 is the worst year ever. It’s not even half-way through and we already have Corona virus, total lock down, cyclone Amphan and Nisarga, earthquakes, Uttarakhand forest fire, Locust attack, heat waves, Economy crash down, layoffs in addition to the premature dismissal of our beloved entertainment artists. The news channels and print is raving about it and so is the internet. But, there are other things are also making it to the internet’s most searched topics, here are 6 things that are breaking the internet right now!
1. Paatal Lok
Although 2020 has turned our lives into a living hell, Paatal Lok is a crime-thriller web series premiered on Amazon Prime starring Jaideep Ahlawat, Abhishek Banerjee, Gul Panag, Neeraj Kabi, Ishwak Singh and Swastika Mukherjee. It is loosely based on Tarul Tejpal’s novel The Story of My Assassins that’s about a disabused cop who gets into a case of failed assassination attempt. This investigation thriller is inspired by the Hindu mythological concept of ‘lok’ wherein Swarga (heaven), Dharti (Earth) and Paatal (hell) are the metaphors for different classes in the Indian society.
2. Elon Musk’s baby name
Is it a chemical formula? Is it a secret code? Whatever it is, it’s quite unusual! Baby boy born to Tesla supreme Elon Musk and pop star Grimes made it to the popular searches just within days of existing. Thanks to his parent’s weird nomenclature strategy, the boy was first named X Æ A-Xii but later changed to X Æ A-12 because of its dubiousness under the California law. If you’ve been wondering what that means, Grimes tweeted that the baby name is a combination of different things. X is “the unknown variable,” Æ is her “elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence),” and A-12 is the precursor to the couple’s favourite aircraft, the SR-71 Blackbird. The recent piece of news that brought this back was the nickname ‘Little X’ that Grimes uses for the baby. We know exactly what’s in your mind! The month of May had the Internet going berserk on that name!
3. The Map War
If the natural calamities weren’t enough, we have already gotten into map wars where our neighbours have released maps claiming our territories. It started in April when China released an official map with parts of Arunachal Pradesh included. This was followed by Nepal, where the disputed territories that were owned by both the countries after signing of the Treaty of Sugauli in 1816 were included in the official boundary of Nepal increasing its total area from 1,47,516 square kilometre to 1,47,181 square kilometre. This cartographic war between the Asian countries is all over the Internet.
4. Youtube Vs. Tiktok
The Internet practically tore up into two pieces when the artists of two popular apps locked their horns in order to establish the best among them. Aamir Siddiqui, a Tik Tok influencer, attacked the artists on YouTube blaming them for copying their content, disrespecting them and using crude means to generate content. Carry Minati, a famous roast YouTuber, posted a video in response which got viral and broke many records. The video was later taken down by Youtube stating that the video promoted cyber bullying. The entire episode received heated responses from both sides and even got Bollywood celebs involved. Needless to say, the meme community is on fire since then.
5. Ban Chinese products
Right after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech on the need of self-sufficient or Aatmanirbhar India, appeals for banning Chinese products started surfacing over the internet. The idea reverberated so quickly that an app called ‘Remove china apps’ was developed and it crossed 50 lakh downloads in just a few days. People have been posting #boycottChina slogans to encourage Indians to completely stop buying cheap quality Chinese products and go for Indian counterparts instead.
