In an extremely tragic news for the Bollywood industry and movie fans, veteran actor Irrfan Khan passed away on Wednesday in Mumbai at the age of 53, his spokesperson confirmed.
Irrfan was admitted to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai on Tuesday due to a neuroendocrine tumor and left behind lamenting wife Sutapa Sikder, and sons Babil and Ayan.
The actor died just 3 days after his mother Saeeda Begum passed away in Jaipur. Due to the coronavirus lockdown in the country, Irrfan could not attend her funeral and perform the last rites.
The actor has been suffering in the health department since some time. In 2018, he was diagnosed with tumor and was in the UK for a year for treatment. He resumed shooting for his film “Angrezi Medium” shortly after returning to India in 2019.
In February this year, the actor addressed his fans in a voice note saying that he would not be able to promote Angrezi Medium due to his health condition.
Angrezi Medium’s run in the theaters was stemmed due to the coronavirus outbreak in India. It was released in some theaters before the outbreak locked the entire nation down. Makers of the film, instead of re-releasing the film which they thought of doing initially, went for a release on digital platforms.
Irrfan, who made his debut with Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay in 1988, was unarguably called a master of method acting and a doyen in the film industry. He had also made his presence felt in Hollywood projects such as Jurassic World, Life of Pi and Slumdog Millionaire.
Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar tweeted his condolences for the actor.
“My dear friend Irfaan. You fought and fought and fought. I will always be proud of you.. we shall meet again.. condolences to Sutapa and Babil.. you too fought, Sutapa you gave everything possible in this fight. Peace and Om shanti. Irfaan Khan salute,” wrote Shoojit, who directed Irrfan in Piku.
