Nessa Barret, a social media influencer, has recently crept media frenzy with a video she shared on TikTok. The star was seen dancing to someone reciting the religious verses of the Quran. The video caught immediate attention by the netizens, and her feed was hoarded with comments.
After receiving backlash, the star’s very first impulse was to defend herself stating that she didn’t even know what the Quran was?
The social media influencer, who has over 6.1 million followers garnered worldwide attention over her religious insensitivity. The star is also speculated to have lost future projects due to her recent viral video.
Many who saw the video were offended by Barett’s careless antics. A Twitter user @Leeza_M_ commented
“Hi @nessabarett I hope you realize that this is very disrespectful and offensive to the Muslim Community!!”
On receiving criticism, Barett issued an apology, but it did more harm than good as people seemed unmoved by her apology. She blamed the creation of the video on her mental block – her being out of ideas, and also pointed to her Egyptian stepmother to try to get a pass.
This led to the entire family being dragged into the pit, with them facing the heat as well. Barett later defended her family saying that it “isn’t fair,” as it was her mistake.
Another viewer went on to say “YALL THIS GIRL NAMES NESSA FROM TIKTOK HAD THE AUDACITY TO ‘THROW IT BACK’ TO AN AUDIO OF A MAN RECITING QURAN, AND THEN GIVE A HALF ASSED APPOLOGY SAYING HER STEP MOM IS EGYPTIAN WTFF CANCELLEDDDD” #nessabarettisoverparty
Although the video was put down moments after it was uploaded, reports Business Insider, viewers managed to get the video just in time (watch the video here)
As far as keeping in mind the religious sensitivity, we hope influencers would be more careful while creating and choosing content, and not view everything as a challenge to get viral!
