The coronavirus pandemic shows no signs of stopping as the daily COVID-19 infections across the globe continue to rise. In fact, India has been recording the highest number of daily coronavirus cases in the world for quite some time now. The country is only a few days away from topping the list of coronavirus infections in the world. Amidst the rising coronavirus cases, WHO has expressed its hope that the pandemic will be over soon. Dr. Tedros Adhanom, WHO Director-General, says that he hopes the coronavirus pandemic will end sooner than the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom says that if the world succeeds in building a coronavirus vaccine, this pandemic will end within two years. However, WHO has always been pretty cautious before handing out any statements in order to curb the spread of any misinformation and false hopes. Dr. Tedros claims that the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic took two years to end.
He said in his statement to the press, “And in our situation now with more technology, and of course, with more connectedness, the coronavirus has a better chance of spreading, it can move faster now because we are more connected. But at the same time, we also have the technology to stop it and the knowledge to stop it. So we have a disadvantage of globalization, closeness, connectedness but the advantage of better technology. So, we hope to finish this coronavirus pandemic in less than two years.”
Dr. Tedros Adhanom further added to his statement, “Nation unity and global solidarity are the keys to utilizing available tools to the maximum and we can have additional tools like a vaccine.” According to a Reuters tally, more than 22.81 million people in the world have contracted the COVID-19 infection and nearly 793,382 people have succumbed to death. With continuous efforts from the leaders of the world, health experts, and scientists, we hope that the world will soon witness the end to this pandemic and return to a safer environment.
