Undekhi: Sony LIV and its New Web Series Create a Buzz

TV shows have been using ways to promote the shows on various platforms in order to gain a good base of audience. Recently, the commencement of streaming platforms and web series has made the competition even more vigorously. People are reaching new heights to promote it and unique ways to get the audience to watch their show. However, many times they fail to hit the right keys when aiming to do so. Sony LIV recently released a new web series on its app by the name Undekhi, whose promotional methods are receiving heavy criticism.

The app, Sony LIV, is known for giving the audience shows like The War of the Worlds, A Confession, 1917, For Life, and many more. The application recently adopted a new way to generate an audience for their new show- Undekhi. It might seem unconventional to many, but it might get on several people’s nerves. The network employed telecallers to help them promote the show. The call starts with a man informing you that he has recorded murder on his phone and that a man named “Rinku” is threatening him and trying to kill him as well. After that, a voice informs, “Undekhi… streaming now on Sony Liv.”

The new thriller web series, Undekhi, is based on real-life events and it was released on Sony LIV on the 10th of July. Soon, people who received these calls flogged Twitter to express their discontent with this new promotion. It is, indeed, ridiculous to call someone and inform such a grave and serious thing to the potential audience. It has the potential to cause panic if someone misses out on the last few words. Undekhi has been called ‘creepy’ by many of its audience. Users have been tagging Mumbai Police to let them know about these disturbing calls going around. Telemarketers have done such stunts before as well for the movie, Pihu. Soon after, Sony LIV issued an apology for opting for such a marketing technique. They said, “If you have received a call for our show Undekhi & it has disturbed you we would like to sincerely apologize to you. This was a test activity that has gone out accidentally & our intention was not to cause any kind of discomfort or panic. We sincerely regret any inconvenience”.
